  • Information for Prospective PhD Students

  • Thank you for your interest in the Laboratory of Genetic Engineering at Okayama University. We occasionally receive a large number of inquiries from prospective PhD students, so please read the following carefully before contacting us.

  • Before You Contact Us

  • Read our recent publications. Familiarize yourself with the research currently being conducted in our laboratory. A list of publications is available on this website.

  • Prepare a research proposal. Your email must include a brief but specific research proposal (approximately 1–2 pages) that clearly describes:

  • The research question you wish to address

  • Why this question is important

  • How it relates to the ongoing research in our laboratory

  • Your proposed methodology or approach

  • Explain your motivation. Tell us specifically why you want to join this laboratory, beyond a general interest in the field. We want to understand what unique aspect of our research attracted you.

  • Include your academic records. Please attach your CV, academic transcripts, and a list of any publications or conference presentations.

  • Important Notes

  • Generic or template-based emails will not receive a reply. We can recognize mass-sent emails and will not respond to them. Please take the time to write a personalized message that demonstrates genuine familiarity with our work.

  • Repeated follow-up emails will not improve your chances. If you do not receive a response, please understand that we may not be able to accommodate new students at this time. Sending daily reminders is not appropriate.

  • Admission is competitive. Even with a strong application, acceptance depends on available funding, laboratory capacity, and the fit between your research interests and our current projects.

  • MEXT Scholarship applicants: If you are applying through the MEXT program, please note that a letter of acceptance from a supervisor is not guaranteed. We will only consider issuing one after a thorough review of your qualifications and research proposal.

  • A Realistic Note on the MEXT Scholarship

  • We want to be transparent about the MEXT Scholarship process. The MEXT Scholarship is extremely competitive, and obtaining a letter of acceptance from a supervisor does not guarantee that you will receive the scholarship. In our past experience, there have been multiple cases where candidates with published research papers and solid academic records were nonetheless unsuccessful in the MEXT selection process. We encourage you to have a realistic understanding of these odds and to consider alternative funding options as well.

  • We look forward to hearing from motivated and well-prepared candidates who share a genuine interest in our research.
